This 2 day workshop is for everyone interested in partnering with canines to help people. It is an introduction to the field and will discuss terminology, ethical integrations, education for handlers, and an introduction to assistance dogs. Together we will explore dog body language, best training practices, and demonstrations of both, while uncovering the field of CAI. Working dogs that are able to kennel quietly, are friendly with other dogs and people, and are well controlled on leash will be permitted to join us. Dogs in attendance will have the opportunity to take part in training demos and receive hands on training advice and assistance. These training opportunities will be interspersed between seminar style instruction and so the dogs will need to be calm during kennel time away from their handlers. They also must be up to date on all vaccines. Limit of 3 working dogs in attendance. You will be coached by top AAI animal trainers to build your own observation and training skills, thereby creating a solid foundation to becoming a highly skilled and effective AAI professional. You will also gain important information about the ethics and standards of procedure necessary for incorporating CAI within your scope of practice. It is intended for mental health professionals, others in the helping and teaching professions and those curious about how animals accomplish their co-counselor role.

Exploring animal assisted interventions internship
Dreamcatcher™ is offering the opportunity to gain a more thorough understanding of the impact of equine facilitated methods and 8 other species of animals in animal-assisted practices in this 3 day internship. Each day is full of stimulating applications and is intended for mental-health professionals or anyone wishing to advance their knowledge, skill and practices in an animal-assisted venue.
What Will the Internship Involve? - Taking part in activities and exercises with animals designed to help people with a variety of life issues. These activities will address the learning needs of each certifying professional. - Hands-on application of animal assisted interventions to provide a complete understanding of the processes involved in this therapeutic medium. - An understanding of how to effectively help people of all ages who are experiencing mental health diagnoses, difficult life issues and / or hard-to manage behavior, and who may be hard to engage while interacting with animals in a natural setting, while gaining a new perspective on how you affect and deal with your world. - An understanding of the impact of equine facilitated methods and 8 other species of animals in animal-assisted practices., while learning how animals in the helping professions can help people understand themselves, problem solve effectively, learn healthy communication skills and set and reach their goals. - Learn the value of functional assessments through observations of people with animals, realize your scope of practice and develop a concise plan for your next steps in development. - Understand how individual program plans can be designed with animal interactions to meet participants’ needs. - Realize the importance of boundaries in life and become skilled in setting and maintaining them safely and humanely. - Appreciate the dramatic effects of non-verbal language and the importance of reading and understanding those of the animals we are working with as well as those of the people we are helping, and thoroughly explore the ethics of working with animals in professional practice. CANINE ASSISTED SUPPORT SERVICES TRAINING

Training for Canine-Assisted Support Services
This course is designed especially for people who may be partnering, or wishing to partner, with canines to support people through casual visitation in times of non-acute stress, for those who may be working in therapy or therapeutic settings and for those who may be partnering with animals in school settings. People wanting to learn more about the detailed aspects of working with animals ethically to help people are also welcome.
You will learn:
- In-depth and vital information about canine language and behavior
- How to ethically engage your canine within your population of choice
- How to handle yourself and your animal professionally while working to provide canine-assisted services within your scope of practice.
Candidates must be 18 years of age to enroll in this program and be actively working with or currently supporting people.
There are two education options offered:
One Day Course
This course is designed for people who do not currently have a canine that they wish to partner with but would like education about what is involved in Canine-Assisted Support Services and how to ethically prepare themselves to do this work. $149.00 + GST
Two Day Course
A second day of this course is offered to those who already have a canine they wish to work with. Focus will be more on understanding canine communication and behaviour, and screening of the canine with expert advice provided about your canine’s likes/dislikes and developing recommendations for involving your canine in a canine-assisted support program ethically. Dogs must be 1 year or older to enter into this process.
